8:13 pm - The State of Sketch
|
Brendan posted an entry on sketch comedy vs. sitcoms not too long ago (here: http://www.xorph.com/nfd/2007/10/30/this-is-for-everybody-who-misses-how-the-internet-used-to-bag-on-studio-60/ ) that was a great debate sparker. Being immersed in the world of live comedy, in particular sketch and improv, I offered a few views of my own on the some-places-burgeoning, some-places-wilting artform. I am ridiculously convinced that this is the next biggest movement in Theatre history (the Improv Movement), and in no way is this facet of today's theatre losing steam; certain venues and outlets for it, maybe, but in general this is a huge, loud, frighteningly exciting locomotive that is hurtling down the tracks. It's our choice whether or not to stand on those tracks.
Here were my thoughts on Brendan's entry:

6:46 pm - I don't consider this NFL analysis.
|
I happened upon the following article today and read it in its entirety:
http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/7145394?MSNHPHMA
Normally I wouldn't give a single shit about the Bengals or the NFL in general, but seeing KY in the title and knowing that they hold their training camp in Georgetown, I decided to take a look at it. What I read not only shocked and angered me, it made me wonder just how people in such prolific roles really get away with the things that come out of their mouths.
The article (written by Jay Glazer, Senior NFL writer for foxsports.com) details a visit to the Bengals' camp in KY. What is lacking, however, are details about the Bengals, how the camp is going, and any kind of team analysis (as the article is touted in a link). What is not lacking is a study in defamation of a people's culture, and an amazingly brash opinion on the apparent horridness of KY. The article has a disclaimer at the beginning which states "The Annual Jay Glazer Training Camp Tour brings our NFL Insider from town to town and, to be honest, it often isn't pretty." This opinionated rant is more than "not pretty." It's completely offensive. When I first read it, I also read the comments that were posted by real people after it, but those comments have ceased to appear since my first reading a few hours ago.
I think the First Amendment grants us a wonderful right and privilege; is it weird to anyone else that something this derogatory and downright mean is allowed to be published on such a popular and "professional" website? I realize that Fox Sports is not always a class act and also that every person is entitled to their opinion (which I'm not arguing), but should something like this really go to the public from a national news source? I am offended because I love the state I grew up in, and because my parents struggled and made lives for themselves and me in that state. Not every person there is the most educated and not everyone there is a saint, but there are real people there, and a distinct culture, and it is something to be appreciated. I believe this article was unintelligent and rude, and even if its purpose was simply to rile people up, Jay Glazer could've done a much better job with a much more creative approach.

I'm semi-convinced there's a ghost in my apartment. Ezzie has been stopping what she's doing lately to stare off in different directions (down the hall, at the door, towards the middle of the living room) and start barking and "murmuring" (which is sorta like growling, only not as vicious). Before that, she had been looking up at the ceiling often and suddenly, and flipping her head back and forth like she was trying to follow something. I've also been sitting on the futon watching TV and felt a gust of cold air on my head.
Now, there are perfectly logical explanations to each of these situations:
1. It's friggin' cold here and my windows are leaky as it is.
2. Ezzie's bangs are out of control. She might just be trying to see out from under them, causing her to flip her head in odd directions.
3. Ezzie could just be a little nut. There have been plenty of times she's brought me her ball to throw, and in her haste to beat it down the hallway crashed into the wall.
It would be much cooler to have a ghost in my apartment than for my puppy to be crazy. Much cooler.

12:00 pm - 2 Years
|
That's right, 2 years today. I flew here with a suitcase, a pair of sunglasses, and a baseball hat. I have since put up the suitcase, broken the sunglasses, and worn out the hat. But I'm writing this on my computer in my apartment with my dog running around behind me. Try jumping in the deep end sometime. It's really not that bad - provided you don't fill your pockets with rocks beforehand.

2:55 pm - That proverbial age that people love to wish they were again.
|
So I've been alive for a quarter of a century now. At least I haven't had to file for bankruptcy yet. That's not my measure of success, mind you.
Currently I'm in a show at Donny's Skybox, Second City. It's called Abandon Relationship! and I'm very proud of it. It was written by students of the Second City writing program, and has a great director and the rest of the cast is wonderful. People really seem to enjoy the show, and we have a lot of fun with it. It is a sketch show, with scenes of varying lengths and a couple songs. I get to play a hard-ass stereotypical drill sergeant at one point. I also get to say "China Charlie's rice-flavored piss." Good times.
I'm also in rehearsal for another show presented by the writing program just like this one, and the next show will open in March. On top of that, I just started Level 4 in the Second City Conservatory and I just joined a gym. Yay health!
My parents are alive. My dad had a relapse of the Lymphoma back in October and had to get hardcore treatment and spend a month in the hospital. I believe he was able to fight it off once again, and is now in recovery phase. Both my parents got pneumonia two weeks ago, though. It hit my mom harder, and she had to go into the hospital last week. She's out now, and much better, but it's still weird to have your parents go in and out of the hospital so much, you know?
Ezzie is doing well. She's crazy and explosive and almost 7 months now. She's smart, too, and has learned quite a few tricks, even if she doesn't have the discipline aspect of them mastered quite yet. If there are multiple steps to a trick, she'll cycle through every one and get to the end trick just so she can get the treat. Too smart for her own good. Here are some pics of us, back from T-giving (I think):

8:33 am - News you can Snooze to
|
Past:
+ Had visits from the parents + Had a visit from the Lisa Brown! + Made a quick trip to KY and took a roadtrip with the parents to Paducah - Walked around the Blackberry Festival a couple times. Remembered why I left Carlisle + Got a raise at work + Finished up my demo tape for voiceovers +/- Finished up the first run of my first real improv show in Chicago, Adventures in Comedy. It was pretty successful with audiences, and very fun to be in. The last show even had "Centaurs" in it. Improvised, of course
Present:
+ In rehearsal for a sketch show, the "Saturday Morning TV All-Star Variety Hour" in which I play Batman (the Adam West version) and a little boy in a couple commercials (more details to come) + In rehearsal for an Improv show at Donny's Skybox (Second City) based on our class show at I.O. It's called Secrets. Should be a good time + Got a new gal in my life, and she is the cutest thing EVER! Her name is ( Esmerelda )
Future: - Need to get new headshots - Need to finish up artwork for my demo tape and mass produce it + Need to make a trip to Louisville and visit some of my favorite people. I haven't had the opportunity to hang out with friends much, and I need their company - Still don't have Interweb at home... I should look into that + Another run of Adventures in Comedy will be starting soon
That's that. A RSMUP will be coming soon, much more has happened. I could bitch about things and relationships and unhappiness, but a lot of good has happened too. It would be good to hear from you. Anyone. Heart.

5:32 pm - UC - Holla!
|
Hey you Cinci kids:
Start listening on the radio for commercials about the University of Cincinnati's Performing Arts school. I just recorded my very first voiceover gig yesterday, a 60 second spot plugging UC's coolness, and it should be running soon (just not sure what station). I got paid and everything! I'm a working actor! I also got to say "Astrophysics" and have the capper line, "it's all UC!"
Tell me if you ever hear it.

She is more than beauty personified. She is Life She is Art She is Religion She is gold in a sunset-painted sky She is starlight on a calm North Atlantic ocean She is the sensation when blood drains from your arms and you try to move your pinkie after a first kiss She is the feeling of having no legs when the first kiss is done She is the essence of a first kiss She is the epitome of Connection She is Air She is Oxygen She is Essential She is Everything or Nothing and Nothing but Everything She is worth it She is Priceless She defies value She is the scent of the earth when it rains in July She warmed the caramel coating for the apple in my eye She is a look She is Intuition She is into anything worth a damn She is a look She is bottled Amazement She is Captivating She is the eye of the storm raging throughout my soul She is a look She is a Firecracker She is Stolen Time She is Conscience She is therefore I am She is Softness She is Sensuality She is a Goddess to contain all these mesmerizing traits, isn't she? She is.

9:54 am - Busy Month

Three different performances in a week... improv and sketch.
If you're ever bored on a Sunday night in Chicago, for the next six weeks I'll be performing at IO every Sunday at 8 pm with my graduating class. Our group's name is 5B Arthur, tickets are 5 bucks, and much hilarity ensues.
Last Friday I performed in a sketch show called "Cappin' the Week," a Daily Show meets SNL type of performance. Among other characters, I got to play a homeless man, a border patrol redneck, and Dubya. Fun times.
I am moved into my new place, and it is quite badass. Once I put my kitchen stuff away, I should be ready to entertain hardcore. Bought a little hibachi grill and a cooler - I am totally ready to head out to that roof and chill, yo! Still out on the Interweb, though, need to up my antenna receiving capabilities. The cable is free, though, so I can't really complain too much. I have a real-life bed now, with real-life sheets and I bought a real-life bed-in-a-bag, too. Hyphen. My bedroom is decorated all Van Gogh and shizz... dark blues, blacks, and some yellows here and there. And three Van Gogh prints so far. Rock.
Oh yeah, going to New Orleans in less than a week.
Peace.

12:11 am - A Welcome Inferno
|
She lights the fires that rage inside my head. Instead of fighting off the blaze, the flames are fed with passionate desire, and now my brain is all but razed down to a fashionable stage in which She takes a not-so-fleeting leading role.
She makes the drollest day worth living for in ways that would amaze Houdini, or a younger Willie Mays. She's like a bottled genie, doling wishes out galore, and when She speaks, delicious silver sparks seek resonance within the dancing firestorm and warm the scorching romance all the more.
She can enchant the very moon and stars at night by granting just one glance from fiercely almond eyes. She holds the fire mesmerized, and molds my fond desire with entrancing, charming beauty that's disarmingly inspired and entirely undisguised.

Gold, glow, glitter, grow, glow, glitter, glow gold, grow, glitter, grow, glow Desperate rays of dying sunlight fading, flying, flitter finely, trying ways to show a sign of Life, denying night and throwing flowing shades of smokey, lemonade-ish hues across a lost and lonely sky, with crimson curtain clouds that cross and weave and cause a quiet, catastrophic chemistry as scenery to see the setting sun leave memories that never die but settle sweet on little rays of light that glitter, growing glowing gold, trying ways to match the glow of Life I see inside her eyes...

7:33 pm - One Year.
|
Here I am.
A year to the day.
I'm alive, and muchly resembling a person. What has happened in a year? You probably know most of it. Not as much as I would like to've happened. But a bit. It's fun. Frustrating, but fun. As long as you focus, it's not scary in the least bit.
Here's some news: I signed the lease for a new apartment today. I'm moving into a 2 BR deal in west Lincoln Park - the best part is the area; I'm literally right across the street from a Trader Joe's! To add, I'm right above a bar, which means I can be as loud as I want. I also have rooftop access... I smell 4th of July kegger! WOO!
If you haven't been to visit yet, please do soon. I'll have a good place to entertain now. And Chicago is the shit.
Happy 21st! No more month-by-month Chicagoversaries. It'll be by the year now, baby.
Peace.

There are many reasons I hate working in a corporate environment. One of the more annoying ones is the corporate lexicon. Below is just a smidgen of loathsome corporate terms I hear/read everyday.

Friday, February 24th: Received email from the director of "Dungeons & Harolds" with the following line in the text: "That's right, you have been cast on the team."
I am officially on an improv team, and not just any improv team - the first improv team in Chicago to attempt to fuse the rules of long form improvisation with the rules... of Dungeons & Dragons. Oh yes. D&D and improv. And who got in on this crazy shit?
